For a quick and cheap overview of the city on arrival then
grab a map and jump on the Circular Bus Route. It puts you
down within walking distance of many major sights and helps
you grasp where the different districts begin and end. The
trip takes about one to two hours, depending on traffic, and
you can pick the bus up from the Avenida Merendez
y Pelayo (near the Retiro park) or the Glorieta Emperador
Carlos V (near the Thyssen, Reina Sofia and Prado museum.)
Alternatively, if you want information about the sights you’re
driving past then go on a Madrid Vision Sightseeing
Bus. You can buy a full day ticket, with unlimited
stops for €13, and get on and off as you please at the
designated bus stops. The buses leave every 10-15 minutes
and run until midnight in the summer or 8pm in winter.
If you’re feeling energetic and are a proficient cyclist then join a half day (five hour) tour of Madrid by Bike that sets off every Sunday at 10.30am. You are taken around the major sights and it costs €3,10 or €6 if you need to hire a bike as well. Contact the Madrid Tourism Centre, Plaza Mayor, 27, telephone 90 222 16 11 to book.
The Madrid Tourist Centre also offer more usual tours of medieval Madrid, Madrid’s traditional shops and taverns and Madrid’s convents if you fancy something a little different.
Pullmantour, Plaza de Oriente, 8; Telephone
- 91 541 18 07, is one of Spain’s largest tour operators
and offers half day artistic tours (€34 per person) of
Madrid which includes entrance to the museums. They also offer
